"Empires and Identities": a special
session at the conference: "Colonial and Post-Colonial
Remembering and Forgetfulness"

The organising commitee for the conference cycle "Colonial
and Post-Colonial Remembering and Forgetfulness" to be held
for the second time in Mexico City between the 15 and 18 of
October 2007 is seeking further panelists for a special session/
"sub-conference" dedicated to "Empires and
Identities" that will take place during the conference.
This special session will consist of 4 panels, each with 3 or 4
presentations. Proposals for this special session should address
the general themes of the conference, which is devoted to colonial
and post colonial remembering and forgetfulness viewed from a wide
range of different interdisciplinary perspectives with particular
attention to communicative issues and reflections on „self“
and „otherness“, memories, historical myths and other
expressions of historical and political memory.
The conference "Colonial and Post-Colonial Remembering and
Forgetfulness" will will focus on conceptualizations and
representations of cultural categories in colonial and post
colonial realities, and the ways in which individuals have
understood and enacted these frameworks in their lives. The
program is organised in a large number of special thematic
sessions and subconferences covering a diverse series of topics
extending from a special session on "Voices of slaves in
inquisitorial records" to "Education and Nation-Building
in Latin America" and "Representations of the 'Other' on
the Theater Stage". In 2006, 38 papers were presented by
scholars representing 24 academic institutions in 8 countries.
We welcome submissions from all branches of the social
sciences, humanities, as well as the arts. Graduate students are
encouraged to participate. Papers will be considered on related
themes and topics from a wide range of perspectives. Presenters
are encouraged to interpret the themes of the conference broadly
and may explore any historical period, with any geographic focus.

as e-mail attachments to the organising committee in English,
Castilian, German or French by 25 July 2007. The conference
languages will be English and Castilian.
Interpretations of the conference theme ranging from the
predictable to the surprising are encouraged.
