Literary Genre revealing Women's voices
An
encounter with new novelist Marie Davies in
Los Martes de Enkidu, the Global Think Tank
of the Diversities
Marie
Davis is a highly recognized and awarded
journalist and cartoonist, who
currently is beginning a lesbian fiction
career. Perhaps its not surprising that
following twelve years working as a
syndicated cartoonist, new novelist Marie
Davis writes about ants throwing tiny flower
bouquets to a giant with watermelon-sized
shoes. Like her freelance journalist work,
Marie’s imagery is fresh and inventive.
Her language panache has won seven first
place awards from the Society of
Professional Journalists. Flavored
with lesbian love affairs, Marie’s first
novel Hey Diddle Diddle, revives the 17th
century contes des fees literary genre,
reigniting a historical women’s voice. |

des fees, are a seventeenth century
literary genre, and an original
women’s voice. These fairy tales in
their historic form were NOT intended
for children.
Instead, social and political
commentary hid inside wildly sexual
and inventive stories. |
|
Four
hundred years ago, many women had
prolific literary careers writing
contes des fees. For example, Marie
Catherine D’ Aulnoy published twelve
books in thirteen years.
Unfortunately, these women
writers are mostly lost to history.
Nevertheless, the persistence
of fairy tales, albeit watered down
for children nowadays, is a testament
to the importance and impact of their
work. |

Marie
Davies writes contes des fees. Spoons,
knives, dogs, cats, snails all jump
off the page. Alongside lesbians
entangled in unrequited love, many
astonishing characters animate the
storyline.
Her first novel, Hey
Diddle Diddle, tells the story
behind the famous poem:
Hey Diddle Diddle
The cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the
moon
The little dog laughed to
see such a sight
And the dish ran away with the spoon.
The
overall theme is to be careful for
what you wish. Odd and usual
characters all have wishes that come
true, but with differing outcomes. Yes, the cow does jump over the moon and it is a heroic
effort.
However, reentry is not as
successful, and she rains back down to
earth as beef jerky!
In
this session of Los Martes de Enkidu
Marie Davies will read one short
chapter of her book titled Eve and the
Spoon, which describes a lesbian love
affair and the arrival of a spoon. In continuation, she will read
an excerpt of another chapter that
animates the lovesick spoon.
This
session will be conducted bilingually,
with translation to Castilian. |
