Community Building and Dialogue
Part III:
Enkidu Promotion of Arts and Theater in 2007
Enkidu
believes in a constant dialogue between arts, science and
activism. From the very beginning Enkidu has worked to promote
interesting art that directly or indirectly contribute to
dialogue between cultures, tolerance, the battle against
ignorance and human rights.
| Arts in Aids in Culture
2007
In 2007 the conference
activities took place both in the National Human Rights
Commission in Mexico City and in Hotel del Portal in the
city of Puebla. The conference had a special focus on
Aids and Otherness and Aids in narratives of identities.
Many of the papers presented in 2007 addressed issues
related to translations between cultures and
re-negotiations and re-constructions of cultural
identities in one way or another in relation to AIDS and
HIV.
In 2007 the conference
exhibitions were "Vihda y Draguería – Life &
Dragness" by Antonio Marquet from Mexico and "The
Experiences of HIV/AIDS for Mothers" by Samia Omar
from Kenya. |
| Following the first
Roundtable discussion of this year's Aids in
Culture conference on 8 December, we had the first
artist presentation of the year in the National
Comission of Human Rights in Mexico City. Samia
Omar gave an introduction to her artwork which was
on display in the auditorium. Her exhibition has
the title The Experiences of HIV/AIDS for
Mothers - Las Experiencias del VIH/SIDA en Madres. |

In
the afternoon of 10. December, both conference
exhibitions were transferred to Puebla where
Antonio Marquet from Universidad
Autónoma Metropolitana UAM) in Mexico, presented
his exhibition Vihda y draguería – LHIVe
and Dragness
|

Thereafter,
Samia Omar, originally from Kenya and currently at
the Stony Brook University in New York spoke about
her art and her exhibition to the audience in
Puebla: The Significance’ of AIDS for Women:
Social Stigma and Illness Experiences Portrayed
through Art – El Significado del SIDA para las
Mujeres: Estigma Social y Experiencias de
Enfermedad Retratadas en el Arte

| Enkidu Theater
Promotion in 2007 |
| In 2007 CEDAE, Enkidu's division of theater promoted
the production of the theater Play "Las 80 mejores
amigas" by young and promising theater director and
actor Juan Carlos Cuéllar. The play was performed three times in
different Enkidu events as dramatized lecture and will
have its pemiere as theater play during the Queer
Studies Symposium 2008. |

ended with a dramatized lecture of a theater play:
Las Ochenta Mejores Amigas - Reading of
the Play: The 80 Best Friends, de/by Juan

Juan Carlos Cuéllar, director de la obra Las 80 mejores
amigas en proceso de montaje. Es un actor ecléctico,
egresado del Centro Universitario de Teatro de la UNAM ;
ha trabajado con directores de la talla de Juliana
Faesler, Antonio Castro y Quiatora Monoriel, actualmente
participa en la obra El Enfermo Imaginario bajo
la direccion de Carlos Corona. Como director tiene en
cartelera la obra Mi vida sin Carlos para el Foro
Shakespeare.
Sobre la obra de teatro: Las 80 mejores amigas:
El ser humano tiende a
socializar a la menor provocación. La Amistad es una
forma de Amor y del Amor al Odio... hay un escalón, o
tal vez una sorpresa cuando, al abrirse las puertas de
la memoria (o del elevador), el infinito de
posibilidades que se abren ante tus ojos y tu imaginación
dejará boquiabiertos los corazones y las almas del
espectador. Si en algún momento ves reflejada una parte
de tus pensamientos, un momento de enojo, unas
vacaciones en la playa o alguna amistad o pareja pasada
o presente, entonces, tal vez, la obra formará parte de
tu propia historia.
Las Ochenta Mejores
Amigas relata un pasado amable
con final amargo, pero al mismo tiempo es la historia narrada en tiempo
presente, dulce, irónico, con dramaturgia de Juan
Carlos Cuellar, que recoje escenas de la globalización
contemporanea y cuestiona las relaciones interpersonales
y los sentimientos, sobre todo, a partir de una relación
de amistad con un final, digamos, feliz.
Una obra de teatro que provoca
risas en el espectador y nos invita con la ironía de su
lenguaje oral y del cuerpo, a detenerse unos momentos y
seguir con los actores, este viaje por los secretos más
profundos de Marlene y Greta, dos amigas que hubieron
sido las mejores y ahora descubrirás por qué.
