Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Xochimilco (Special Event October 31th 2004 and/or November 1st.)

Enkidu is pleased to invite you to spend two very special nights with us: Enkidu's annual tour to the Día de Muertos [Day of the Dead] in Xochimilco, a fascinating ancient community in the southern part of Mexico City. You will be invited to participate in the actual event, not simply as an observer, but as an integrated part of it all, and celebrate this enchanting and enchanted night with the native people of  Xochimilco. We look forward to share this experience with you with you! Our guide at this particular tour will be Agustín Villalpando Sanchez, Enkidu Magazine's news editor and himself a native of Xochimilco. He will share childhood memories with you and explain some of the deeper meanings attached to this ritual in local culture.

Día de Muertos is a celebration that incorporates several elements of pre-Christian religion. It represents in many ways, an encounter in this dimension between two separate, yet not totally alien worlds: the dimension of the living and the dimension of the non-living. People in Xochimilco believe that the spirits of the departed ones return to this world in these two particular nights: On October 31,the spirits of the babies and children who have died return to this world and on November 1st, the spirits of the departed adults will be among us. Each day has its special rituals and setting that start at 20:00 Hrs. when the "Ofrenda de muertos" [The offering to the dead] is placed in each and every household. On the day dedicated to the spirits of the children, the tables in the houses are set with bread, candy, fruit, sodas, flowers, candles & incense, while on the day for the spirits of the adults, you can find complete traditional meals, beer and more fruit, candles, flowers & more!

Enkidu Tours-Mexico From Behind invite you to experience the "Ofrenda", a traditional offering to the spirits of the departed ones in private homes in Xochimilco and thereafter to spend part of the night or, if you wish, the entire night in Xochimilco's public cemetery. We want you to become involved with a festivity that brings entire families -from babies to seniors- with flowers, music, food and blankets in order to keep in touch, sing and talk with ourselves and keep the dead ones with company. This is an extraordinary opportunity to experience Mexico from Behind and Within!!!

Tianguis del Día de Muertos en Xochimilco
A market in honor of the Day of the Dead
During the last two weeks of October, various stall holders from the surrounding area descend on the local esplanade in Xochimilco to sell items related to the annual Day of the Dead festivities. In this market you can find a hodgepodge of traditional items, including traditional indigenous offerings of food, flowers, incense and copal (a hard resin derived from trees) as a gift for the gods or in honor of the deceased. You will also find items related to Anglo-Saxon celebrations such as Halloween, which are increasingly popular among the younger crowd.

There are also performances of regional dances and handicrafts from around Mexico.

Parking is available, but avoid going in the late hours of the evening for your own personal safety.
