Exploring the Past and Present of Gay Mexico City

City Tour
Duration: ca. 6 hours
Tour Description

This City Tour starts with hot chocolate in a classical Mexican café which has offered the best chocolate in town for generations (or, depending on where you are staying, a coffee in another place). Here the guide will provide a general orientation about the day. Thereafter, we will continue by subway to Archivo General de La Nación, the Mexican National archives in Palacio Lecumberri which once used to be a prison where several individuals charged with homosexuality were kept in captivity. A common word that refers to gays in Mexican Spanish is "J" which is pronounced JOTA in Spanish. In this prison, the cells for gays were all in the "J" (jota) - wing, which is how this label (Jota, Joto), came into general usage in Mexican Spanish.

After our visit to Lecumberri, we will travel by bus through the crowded and colorful market area TEPITO before we arrive in the very center of Mexico City, the huge square called ZOCALO. Here we will visit Templo Major, the most prominent temple in pre-Hispanic Mexico City and the center of the imperial state cult of the Aztecs. In the museum, a general introduction to homosexuality in pre-Hispanic Mexico will be given. Thereafter we will visit Plaza Santo Domingo with its several monumental buildings, where also the Spanish Inquisition had its tribunal between 1571 and 1820. Several men of all ethnic groups who had been accused of indulging in sexual activities with other men, serious crimes against the faith, were brought in before the tribunal, punished and humiliated on this very spot. This is therefore the perfect background for an introduction to homosexuality in colonial Mexico.

Lunch is included in the tour and we will eat in a bright and pleasant gay resturant, Generalito, before we walk through La Alameda to visit the place where over a hundred years ago, the first recorded police operation against gays in Mexico City took place. Today a Gay memorial on this spot commemorates these events. This event has also left its traces in the language and here we will learn the background for an other Mexican slang expression for GAYS; 41 (cuarenta y uno), which is a frequent synonym for homosexual.

The tour will end with a brief visit to Zona Rosa, where most GLBT places are located. A cup of coffee in one of the local Vips-cafes will be included. The Vips are classical cruising places in Mexico City, although not officially gay localities.
